The new Pixar show Win or Lose debuted on Disney+ and is making headlines after cutting a trans storyline and adding a religious one.
The animated series originally featured a trans girl as one of its characters but was later cut from the project. Now, critics are upset to see another storyline tied to the Christian faith of one of the other characters on the show.
The first episode of the new show introduced viewers to Laurie, the right fielder for the Pickles softball team and the daughter of the team’s coach, Dan. Struggling with insecurities around her softball abilities and anxious to impress her father, Laurie turns to her religion for support.
While the character, named Kai, remains in he show, there is no reference to their gender.
“When it comes to animated content for a younger audience, we recognise that many parents would prefer to discuss certain subjects with their children on their own terms and timeline,” a Disney spokesperson said upon announcing the change in narrative in December 2024.
Many liberal Disney fans ask if the entertainment giant is trying to make conservative audiences happy after the recent pullback of DEI initiatives under Trump's administration.
“Dear Heavenly Father, please give me strength,” she says.
"Oh my God, it was crazy,” actress Chanel Stewart, who plays Kai, responded to the news.
She told Deadline. “I wore it as a badge. I wore it with pride. I wore it with honor because it meant so much to me. The thought of authentically portraying a transgender teenage girl made me really happy. I wanted to make this for transgender kids like me."
