Drag Race season 16 starts off with bang and record shattering ratings

Mama Ru and RuPaul’s Drag Race comes out on top as a winner baby! Deadline has reported that season 16 opened with record-high ratings for the cult drag competition series.

The series premiered on Jan. 5 and according to Nielsen’s live + three-day data, the first of a two-part premiere of Drag Race season 16 had the best TV share for any season premiere in the herstory of the franchise. Even more, season 16’s share was up 4 percent compared to last season.

Additionally, season 16 premiere had the highest-rated Drag Race premiere episode in six years. Nielsen’s data, also reports that Drag Race was also the most-watched cable show of the day on Friday, Jan. 5, 2024, in both 18-49 and 18-34 demos. 

 

 

RuPaul introduced the world to seven of the 14 talented glamazons competing in season 16. The premiere was split in two with the remaining half being introduced in the second episode. 

Ahead of the drama and shenanigans this season, two twists for the season were announced.

The first being the winner of the week would get immunity from a future elimination. Secondly, this season would introduce the ‘Rate A Queen’ element, where the queens will judge one another.

 

 

 

News of the successful premiere of season 16 comes off the heels of RuPaul extending his record for most wins in the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Competition Program category. 

This is the host's eighth consecutive win for his gig on the hit drag competition series and has been taking home trophies since 2016. 

While Q and Sapphira Cristál were named as the top two queens of the week, others were living for 29-year-old Las Vegas-based performer Mirage’s talent show performance.
