Easy ways to distract your 2020 election anxiety

election 2020 results leave many with anxiety

The ballots are in and the constant political ads have come and gone. Millions of Americans play the waiting game as each state tallies up votes for the highly anticipated 2020 U.S. election. But the combination of the constant notifications and nail-biting numbers leave many feeling a sense of anxiety.

Luckily, we've listed some ways to make these next couple of days a little less stressful and more about self-care.

1. Dive into entertainment

The easiest way to escape the chaos of news about the election is to simply change the channel. Immerse yourself in TV and movies. Use the time to catch up on the latest season of your favorite series. Check out this list of some of our favorite drag shows to stream!

Our brains deserve a break! If your eyes need a rest from staring at screens we recommend turning to books or podcasts for relief. The main idea is to steer clear of politics. We promise you'll find yourself more at ease, even if just for a moment.

2. Maintain your social media usage

We know, the anticipation! But the constant updates and notifications really do impact our mental health. Sure, take a peek at the recent developments here and there. But always move onto other, drama-free activities.

You know what they say: "Out of sight, out of mind."

3. Get active

Staying indoors for too long is easy to do — especially since we've been cooped inside for seven months. It's important to make time to get outside, soak up some sun, and breathe some fresh air. Stretch. Walk around the block. Just get active! Getting out of the house (with a mask) is a great way to break up the day and distract you from your worries for a while.

4. Tidy up your spaces

A good deep cleaning can really improve your overall mood. Now, no need to go all Marie Kondo. Start by tiding up the spaces you use the most. Then, work on small projects. Clean out messy drawers. Alphabetize the spice rack. If you have a lot time on your hands, move on to bigger tasks like doing a load of laundry or dusting.

Spend some time checking in with the people in your life. We are still in a pandemic and people are still feeling a bit isolated. Shoot them a text, schedule a video chat, or meet up for a safe and socially distanced get together. It can be comforting to talk your anxieties through with people you love. Support one another, make new memories, and plan to spend some quality in-person time together once it's safe again.
