Irish drag artists Lucina Schynning and Krystal Queer were recording a promo video on a public street in Cork when a man approached and attacked them.
The queens shared a video on social media showing footage of the attack and explaining the details leading up to the incident.
“Last night we wanted to film a silly little video to promote an upcoming event, unfortunately while we were recording we experienced two unprovoked homophobic attacks. If anyone has any footage or information on the men included in the above video, we would really appreciate you reaching out to us.”
When the queens initially confronted the man, another group of men began assaulting them, striking Krystal in the face with a smartphone. Cheers and laughs could be heard in the recording as no one intervened in the altercation.
The attacks left the performers bloodied and bruised.
Schynning said: “We weren’t in anyone’s way, we weren’t agitating anybody, we were just two drag queens having an awful lot of fun together and unfortunately us existing and enjoying ourselves was an invitation for people to assault us.”
“It’s also been a reminder as to how important what we do is. We are going to keep enjoying ourselves and being very openly queer.”
They updated their followers two days later, thanking and informing supporters that all the perpetrators had been identified and reported to the Garda Síochána.
“Thank you all so much for your support, your comments, and your messages,” they said. “We are so grateful for every last one of you and promise we will get around to reading them all.”
According to a Garda spokesperson, Investigations into the incident are still ongoing.
