Jinkx Monsoon lands role on Broadway's 'Chicago'

Although Jinkx Monsoon is a renowned drag performer and two-time RuPaul’s Drag Race winner, she is now branching out Broadway.

Via her official Twitter account on Tuesday, Monsoon revealed she would be portraying Matron "Mamá" Morton in the show 'Chicago.'

"I'm excited to share I'm making my BROADWAY DEBUT, as my favorite role, in one of my favorite shows! CHICAGO! @EW," she wrote.

Her casting will mark the first drag queen to play Matron "Mama" Morton. Monsoon will be starring in the role starting Jan. 16 for eight weeks.

In a separate tweet, the “Strange Magic” singer expressed her excitement for the role, writing, “I cannot stress enough that this has been a lifelong dream of mine," Jinkx told Entertainment Weekly.

"The first number I performed in drag was 'All That Jazz,' so this feels almost too serendipitous," she continued, referencing the iconic opening number in Chicago performed by Velma Kelly.”

As news of Jinkx's upcoming project broke, fellow ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ stars were quick to congratulate.

Among them was Detox who wrote: “I am soooooooo thrilled for you! So deserved! So overdue!

The Vivienne commented, “Yes my sis! All the everything! Jumping for joy!!!!! Aaaa!!!!!!!!!”

Derrick Berry reflected on the impact Jinkx’s casting will make, saying: “This is a game changer for us all! Congrats on leading the way Miss Leading Lady!

Jinkx's upcoming Broadway debut in the show comes after she took home the crown this summer as the winner of RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars season 7, after previously coming in first place during the original series' fifth season.

Monsoon is currently on tour with the acclaimed theatrical spectacular, The Jinkx & DeLa Holiday Show, co-starring with her best friend and fellow drag star, BenDeLaCreme.
