New show, King of Drag, has officially crowned King Molasses as the winner of the first-ever season.
The first-ever drag king competition series came to a finale after weeks of epic battles and earth-shattering performances from the kings.
King Molasses emerged victorious from a diverse lineup of ten competitors, making herstory as the series’ first reigning monarch.
In an interview with EW, King Molasses said winning TV’s first drag king competition didn’t feel different from a normal day, but talked about the importance of the show.
“This moment is so much bigger than me in terms of what this cast represents in media and the show’s groundbreaking nature. I situate myself as someone who works hard, and this is what comes with hard work…”
Hosted by renowned comedian and king Murray Hill, this series comes after years of urging from fans of the drag competition franchise RuPaul’s Drag Race. Many criticized the entertainment giant that has yet to feature a competing drag king.
However, a few familiar faces from the Drag Race Universe showed their support for the kings. Permanent judges included Drag Race alumni Gottmik and Sasha Velour, as well as guest judges like Kylie Sonique Love and Carmen Carrera.
Other guest judges included Lisa Rinna, Cole Escola, Paul Feig, Bridget Everett, Landon Cider, Jeff Hiller, Vico Ortiz, Liv Hewson, Mo B. Dick, Brian Michael Smith, and Jackie Beat, among others.
And for winning, King Molasses received $10,000, a one-year supply of e.l.f Cosmetics and e.l.f Skin, a custom suit courtesy of Sharpe Suiting, talent management with Queerup Agency.
Additionally, he scored a round trip flight to Seattle, Washington to headline the Emerald City Kings Ball, and a crown and sceptre from Fierce Drag Jewels.
“I want to show that drag kings are no different from drag queens. We work hard in the community, and because we’re kings, we have to work even harder to support ourselves,” Molasses continued.
“That added challenge is what makes us shine. I want my reign to establish our credibility as artists. We’re always going to be compared to drag queens, but I want my reign to put to bed the ambiguity about what a drag king is.”
