Laverne Cox considers moving out of the country after Trump's re-election

Actress and LGBTQ+ advocate Laverne Cox is opening up about her unease regarding Trump’s re-election as well as what that means for LGBTQ+ people across the nation.

While on a podcast episode of “Just for Variety” Cox detailed her experience watching the the election news coverage.

“I cried,” Cox said when she saw the polling results and turned off the live reports after seeing Trump’s staggering numbers of support.

She compared the Trump administration’s anti-LGBTQ+ agenda to Weimar Germany, saying: “There was this a thriving community of queer people in Berlin pre the rise of Nazism. They attacked Jewish folks. They attacked immigrants, they attacked queer and trans people.”

Cox explained the extra alarm that comes with being an out celebrity during these uncertain times.

“I don't want to be in too much fear, but I'm scared. As a public figure, with all my privilege, I'm scared, and I'm particularly scared because I'm a public figure. I feel like I could be targeted. I think that they spent close to $100 million on anti-trans ads. It's deeply concerning."

In the interview, Cox revealed that she and many of her transgender friends have thought about leaving the country, even researching other countries and their views on the community.

Additionally, the 52-year-old actress reflected on the potential implications that could arise regarding health support for not only the transgender community but also female reproductive health.

“I have to take estrogen just for health. I don’t know if that’s going to be possible anymore,” she said. Stocking up on hormone treatments is one of the things many transgender people are being forced to do as questions about their accessibility, in the coming months, are uncertain.

“There’s a website I’ve gone to already. I haven’t bought any yet because I’m talking to my doctor to make sure it’s all reputable…”

“Certainly I’m concerned about LGBTQ+ rights but I think it’s not a coincidence that the attack on LGBTQ+ people, particularly trans people, is happening at the same time that there is an organized attack on reproductive rights,” Cox added.
