Lizzo takes home Emmy, beating ending RuPaul's winning streak

Lizzo is one step closer to EGOT status after taking home an Emmy for outstanding competition program on Monday night (Sept. 12) for her Amazon Prime Video series, Watch Out for the Big Grrrls.

The popular Amazon Prime series follows the star as she searches for the most talented plus-size dancers for her upcoming tour. Watch Out for the Big Grrrls beat out the Voice, Nailed It, the Amazing Race, Top Chef, and RuPaul’s Drag Race.

The latter was heavily favored to win its fifth consecutive Emmy in the category. “Drag Race” judge, host and executive producer, RuPaul,is the most awarded Black individual in TV academy history with 12 wins.

As she took the stage, the “Truth Hurts” singer  quickly became emotional: “I want to say thank you to the Emmy's and the Emmy voters, first of all I’m very emotional. And the trophy is nice but my emotion is for these people who are on the stage with me.”

In her teary acceptance speech, Lizzo also reflects on what she hopes the win means for people around the world.

“When I was a little girl, all I wanted to see was me in the media — someone fat like me, Black like me, beautiful like me. If I could go back and tell little Lizzo something, I’d be like, ‘You’re going to see that person, but b***h, it’s going to have to be you.'

The series also received five Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards nominations, including two wins for Outstanding Directing for a Reality Program and Outstanding Picture Editing for a Structured Reality or Competition Program.
