Lucian Piane, RuPaul's Drag Race music composer dies at 46

Lucian Piane, best known for his role as a guest judge and show songwriter for RuPaul’s Drag Race, has passed away at 46.

According to records from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, the music producer died on October 12 after being struck by a vehicle in Glendale, California. His death was ruled accidental by the medical examiner.

From seasons 1 through 8, Piane worked alongside RuPaul to create music for the queens' performances and infamous ‘Rusical’ numbers. He helped bring to life hits such as “Cover Girl,” “Sissy That Walk,” and “ Glamazon.” Additionally, he worked on the All Stars spinoff of the show.

Outside of the hit drag competition franchise, Piane won a Grammy in 2007  for his work on the film adaptation soundtrack of Hairspray.

World of Wonder posted a social media post in tribute to Piane’s legacy, writing: “ We are devastated to learn of the passing of Lucian Piane.”

“Lucian left behind a legacy of truly beautiful music. May his struggles never dim the memories of a sweet man, a dear friend, and a master musician. Rest in peace, Lucian.”

Piane publicly struggled with mental health issues as well as substance abuse before his passing. Fans called for an intervention for the songwriter after he posted a series of concerning videos.

In August 2026, Piane shared a post saying he had been sober for more than a year.

TMZ, which first reported the story, says Piane was arrested on Saturday for being under the influence of a controlled substance. On Sunday, he was arrested again for assault of an officer or emergency personnel.

Fellow RuPaul’s Drag Race judge Michelle Visage spoke out about her peer’s passing, commenting: “Such a beautiful soul, so talented…such a loss.”’
