Everyone's favorite Filipino queen and first-ever Drag Society queen, Ongina, just revealed she is taking a hiatus from the drag scene to pursue other career opportunities
Ongina broke the bittersweet news on her Instagram account, with a heartfelt poem to her fans and supporters.
"A new chapter, but I've been here before. Something I left behind, but always wanted more," the post started. “This time, I return to it with new goals, hoping it will bring me the happiness I yearn for.
“A new challenge, dare I say, but the freedom to create something new every day. I’m nervous, I’m excited, but most of all I feel lifted, excited to use the talents I was gifted."
The poem continued, “While I let Ongina take a breather, I know this new creative chapter will be better.
“As I look into my future I’m certain, for now, this is the right move. But I hope you’ll stick around as I dance to this new beat and find my groove!”
Ongina made herstory in the drag community by coming out as HIV-positive during her initial run on RuPaul’s Drag Race season 1 before returning to compete on All-Stars season 5. Since then, she has remained a favorite among the fan base.
In a post to her Instagram story, Ongina clarified that while she is taking a break from the art of drag, she isn't quitting the medium for good.
"Drag will always be a part of me. It has done so much for my life and I'm not quitting. I'm just going to be taking a breather as I start a new role with my other career. You'll still find me performing places, I promise. But for now, excited to see where this new future leads."
A follow-up post also revealed that Ongina’s upcoming appearance at RuPaul’s Drag Con LA 2024 will be the star’s final one.
