This season of Project Runway has come to an end, and a new winner has been announced to fans of the hit fashion design reality series.
Finalists, Jesus Estrada, Veejay Floresca, and Ethan Mundt (AKA Utica from Drag Race), gave it their all in a final runway face-off.
In the end, Floresca proved to be the winner with a collection of gorgeous metallic ensembles, making show history as the first transgender winner.
“I’ve seen you, Heidi, since Season 1, just a little gay boy in the Philippines watching the show, and I’ve always been wanting to do this,” the emotional winner said at the end of the episode
“Now this is my time, so thank you. Thank you for being part of my dream.”
“I came here with the goal to be the first trans woman to win this competition, and I think that will really inspire my community that you can actually reach your dreams by being who you are.”
This year's winner received a cash prize of $200,000, a mentorship with the Council of Fashion Designers of America, and a spread in Elle magazine.
And while Mundt didn’t take home the grand prize during the season 21 finale last week, his mere presence on the show was also one for the history books.
“This is the first opportunity that a queen from RuPaul’s Drag Race gets to go and showcase the work, to actually showcase what a queen can do,” Ethan tells The Hollywood Reporter.
Ultimately, Ethan served the judges a Gothic collection featuring a stunning gown with a silhouette. While a show stopper, the judges felt his creations leaned too dramatically, verging on costume.
“Of course, I was nervous to be judged as just a queen from Drag Race. But I think that I came in and really gagged them a bit.”
