While many are literally "painting the town pink" with Barbie mania, gearing up for the highly anticipated films release, others (notably conservatives) are calling for a boycott.
The upcoming movie was slammed by the Christian movie site Movieguide for its queer talent and representation. The headline reads: “WARNING: DON’T TAKE YOUR DAUGHTER TO BARBIE.”
“The new Barbie movie forgets its core audience of families and children while catering to nostalgic adults and pushing lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender character stories,” the staff-authored article reads.
The review was re-posted by Fox News where they also condemned trans actress Nef, who plays Doctor Barbie.
While she wasn’t specifically selected to be a transgender Barbie, she's does understand the importance of her casting, Nef told Out in an interview.
“David Heyman, the executive producer, told me that when he saw my tape he didn’t know I was trans. He just knew that I got the tone of what they were going for,” she said.
“It’s probably positive for Mattel to include me in this because we’re trying to show all different kinds of Barbies, but that’s not why I got the role. I got the role because I fit the role. To be honest, I don’t look much different in the movie than the Barbies that I had when I was a kid.”
While the star studded film does cast LGBTQ+ faves like Nef, Scott Evans, Kate McKinnon and Alexandra Shipp, the only agenda being pushed is to live authentically.
In the same interview Nef explains what the true message that is being conveyed in the film.
“As much as there’s a celebration of femininity and being a girl in this [movie], I think there’s also an encouragement of letting go of the checklist we ascribe to living and living your life and being in your body your way, on your own terms,” she continues.
“The best that we can do as women, as trans women, is be there for each other and take ourselves at face value, without relying on the green light from someone or anyone else.”
