RuPaul sends a message to anti-LGBTQ+ lawmakers and a call to action to fans

In an Instagram video on Wednesday, Emmy winner and host of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ called the bills “a classic distraction technique” and urged Americans to take advantage of their right to vote.

“Hey, look over there! A classic distraction technique, distracting us away from the real issues that they were voted into office to focus on: jobs, healthcare, keeping our children safe from harm at their own school,” RuPaul said.

“But we know that bullies are incompetent at solving real issues. They look for easy targets so they can give the impression of being effective. They think our love, our light, our laughter and our joy are signs of weakness. But they’re wrong because that is our strength.”

RuPaul continued, “Drag queens are the Marines of the queer movement. Don’t get it twisted and don’t be distracted. Register to vote so we can get these stunt queens out of office and put some smart people with real solutions into government. And by the way, a social media post has never been as powerful as a registered vote.”

Ru’s message comes after Gov. Bill Lee signed into law a bill restricting “adult cabaret performances” in public spaces. This bill  includes “male or female impersonators who provide entertainment that appeals to a prurient interest.”

Further, a bill that bans gender-affirming health care for transgender youths in Tennessee was signed into law on the same day.  Additionally, Tennessee passed another anti-drag bill, this one requiring “adult cabaret performers” to get a permit in order to perform on Monday.

Fourteen other states — including Arizona, North Dakota, Kentucky and Texas — have also proposed anti-drag and anti-trans laws of a similar nature.

RuPaul has previously spoken out against the ban on minors attending drag shows in June 2022. While on “The Late Late Show,” RuPaul echoed similar sentiments about lawmakers’ “diversion tactics.”

“They have changed the narrative away from the gun debate into this drag queen thing. It’s like y’all want to help your kids? Take away them guns, that will help your kids. Drag queens ain’t hurting nobody!” he told host James Corden.
