The RuPaul’s Drag Race season 17 finale has come to pass, which means a new queen has been added to the Hall of Fame!
Queens Jewels Sparkles, Onya Nurve, Lexi Love, and Sam Star were the top four finalists this season. And kicked off the night in a lip sync showdown.
After the jaw-dropping performances, RuPaul named Onya Nurve and Jewels Sparkles as the final two of the season.
As a result, the two battled it out in another lip sync. This time to Lady Gaga’s fresh chart-topper, “Abracadabra.”
To start this year’s Miss Congeniality, who was voted by her fellow queens, was Crystal Envy. She follows in the footsteps of Sapphira Cristal and Xunami Muse, both of whom were on hand to crown their successor.
As for the main competition, Onya Nurve was ultimatley named America’s Next Drag Superstar on Friday night, encompassing the charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent this season.
Last season’s winner, Nymphia Wind, was there to bestow Nurve with the crown and scepter. In addition to the title of America’s next drag superstar, Onya received a one-year’s supply of Anastasia Beverly Hills makeup and a grand prize of $200,000 courtesy.
The newly crowned queen spoke with Variety that she was proud of her success and growth on the series, and picked up on the absence of the main-stage mainstay.
Onya's immediate response was a scream heard around the world!
"Cleveland lost LeBron James, but they got Onya Nurve," Onya told the crowd ahead of her crowning. "I think I would be a perfect representation for this crown, and I could show other entertainers that look just like me, dreams do come true."
Even more, this episode featured a very special appearance from icon Liza Minnelli. RuPaul presented EGOT legend with the ‘Giving Us Lifetime Achievement Award’. The LGBT icon even went on to perform her hit “Ring Them Bells.”
For those who anxious for more of the franchise, World of Wonder announced that n just a few weeks, a gag-worthy cast made up of 18 queens are all returning to compete on All Stars 10, The upcoming season is being called the "Tournament of All Stars" for the franchise.
