This past Drag Race queen to lead SF's Office of Transgender Initiatives

RuPaul’s Drag Race alum Honey Mahogany has been appointed as the executive director of the Office of Transgender Initiatives (OTI) in San Francisco, under Mayor London Breed’s administration.

According to the Bay Area Reporter, in 2020, Mahogany became the first Black trans person to win an elected post in the state of California when she announced her candidacy to be the chair of the San Francisco Democratic Party

“Born and raised in San Francisco, Mahogany has advocated for justice and equity for the LGBTQ+ community for more than two decades, many as a community activist,” the statement began. “As a social worker, she has championed initiatives to address the needs of people living with HIV, people of color, youth, and the unhoused.”

Fans will remember Honey Mahogany when she appeared on Season Five of Rupaul's Drag Race — a season that featured legends like Jinkx Monsoon, Detox, Alaska Thunderfuck, and Alyssa Edwards.

Later on, she became part of The Stud collective, which just successfully reopened the nightclub in a new space on Folsom Street two weekends ago.

In an Instagram post announcing the news, Honey Mahogany shared how grateful she is for the opportunity to make a change in the community.

“It’s a huge honor to be appointed Director of the Office of Transgender Initiatives. I am grateful to Mayor @londonbreed for the opportunity to take on this role, in this first of its kind office, and to fight for my community at this pivotal time in our nation’s history.”
