Turning Point U.S. Gay event raises over $20K for ACLU

On Thursday, April 16, drag queens and kings joined forces to put on a political parody show titled I Want You for Tunring Point U.S. Gay NYC.

Over 1,000 people showed up to support the cause, and the event raised $25,000 for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) to help fund campaigns to defend civil liberties in the United States.

The fundraiser played on the late right-wing political activist Charlie Kirk’s student organization, Turning Point USA, to combat their conservative and anti-LGBTQ+ agenda.

The night opened with a performance of “We are Charlie Kirk,” featuring Lauren Banall in her infamous “Erika Qwerk” persona. Her videos of the widow went viral on social media earlier this year as satire for Kirk's recent public appearances after her husbands assasination.

Among the night’s drag performers were 10 different high-profile MAGA figures, including ex-Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, political commentator Candace Owens,  attorney Rudy Giuliani, and First Lady Melania Trump.

“Drag has always been political,” said Kiki Ball-Change in a statement to LGBTQ Nation. “Ultimately, it’s about reminding people that the things we’re joking about have real-world consequences, and that queer people, especially, don’t have the luxury of separating politics from our everyday lives.”

“History shows us that when people come together, they can make monumental change. So, I want to remind people that there is still hope to be found, and still so much life to enjoy, despite the darkness around us,” Ball-Change said.
